I adore Rent. Soooo much.
I've seen the musical live ten times, with various casts, and I think the movie REALLY paled in comparison to even the WORST time I saw it on stage.
The thing about the movie is its not bad. But its also not good. Its a very mediocre movie, which is such a shame because the story is such an amazing, lovely story. Putting it on film was such a great opportunity, and I feel like the director - Chris Columbus - really squandered it. It really upsets me when I watch the movie because its just so OKAY. You know what I mean? If the movie were awful I would almost feel better because people would realize that the movie was so awful that it must be a bad interpretation - no musical that awful could stay on Broadway for ten years. And if the movie was as amazing as it could have been, I would definitely be happier!
But its neither of those. Its just an okay movie. And so people see it and write it - and the stage version - off as 'okay'. Its so disappointing.
That said, it could have been worse. Having almost the entire original Broadway cast was a very, very wise decision. I remember a few years ago there was a rumor going around about a pop artist version of Rent - its a fact that, for a while, Justin Timberlake wanted the role of Mark - and I cannot say HOW HAPPY I am that that never happened. :D Anthony Rapp was much, much better.
Whoa, sorry, long answer for a rather simple question, isn't it? Sorry about that. I love Rent so much that I get incredibly passionate about this sort of thing!
As for your other questions, Mark is my favorite character, although depending on the day I sometimes answer Mimi, Angel, Roger, Collins, Maureen - pretty much all of them. But Mark is most often my favorite!
And favorite song is such a hard question. I think I like Santa Fe best. La Vie Boheme is another classic, of course.

That movie is my absolute favorite! I found it very touching but also, it informs people about AIDS and Poverty. Very touching
