psychologically we are doomed by natural primeval instinct to save the future.
There is only one way we can go, the child must be saved.

Your family should always come first, so i'd have to say i'd save my family member.
You don't until your in that situation, but i think most people may go for their family member, it would just happen naturally.
But if they are an adult you may save the child, as an adult is more capable of looking after themselves, where as a child most likely will need your help more.

the child.. i love my family members, but the adult ones have lived their lives and i'm sure would gladly give up the rest of their life so I could save a child.. If it were me and some strange child dangling over the edge of a cliff.. I'd tell whoever was holding us to let me go..

I would grab the adult and let them grab the child, there by saving them both.

But here is one for you:
You are driving to escape a bad storm, you come to a bus stop and see your best friend since childhood, an old lady that needs to go to the hospital and the woman of your dreams, but you only have a two seat car. Which do you let in the car?

I do not know - I would in that split instant pray for God's guidance - and then follow my instinct

My faith tells me that I should save the child, and logic also tells me that i would have a better chance of saving the child than the adult

I'd save the family member, every time. I think you'll have a hard time finding anyone who would betray a family member to save another person, even if the other person was the Pope, or another famous person.

I choose to push them both off the cliff. I realize in the final, frustrated moments of decision that I can see a body of water just inches below the cliff.

I think , by instinct I would save the child. Any adult member of my family would understand that and forgive me, even encourage me.

Depends on which family member!!! But I don't care too much for people in general so I probably would leave both.
Otherwise, why are you so morbid as to ask the question?
