1. He kicked the balls of some guy (umm sorry can't recall the name)...which was a SURE SHOT "yellow card"...
2. At this, the referee brought the game to a halt - whilst Ronaldo came over running to check his teammate, and started explaining the course of events to the referee...
3. Rooney pushed Ronaldo hard, away from the referee and got pissed at him for yelling at him and telling stuffz to the referee...
It was just the heat of the moment...but it was definitely a RED CARD call...and that what the referee decided to flash finally...

He only got yellow carded for stomping on the guy. He was red carded for arguing with the referee when they gave him a yellow card. That's why he got a red card.
