They won because they took advantage of the tired German team and capitalized. During the course of the game there were plenty of great looks and smart plays but no one was able to capitalize due to the stupendous goal keeping. Lehnmann gave Italy 2 good shots the entire game and they missed 1. The Italian goalie did a fair job as well. The Italian side also went into an all or nothing mode toward the end of the game. The Germans are some of the best at PKs and Italians arent very good so they decided to go for it. This game could have gone either way up until any point if the match, it just turned out that the German defense was the first to make a mistake.

Because Italy wanted to win in the 120 minutes and avoid penalty kicks, which is what the Germans wanted. Italy knew they had to win the game and not go to penalties and proved by attacking more. Italy had 10 shots on goal (2 hit the post) and Germany only had 2 shots on goal in 120 minutes. At one point Italy was attacking with 3 forwards, Del Piero Gilardino and Iaquinta.

Luck. Pure luck. They both played a fantastic game. Unfortunately, Italy is well known for their faking injuries and wasting time, so they wasted just enough time and faked just enough injuries to squelch Germany's chances of making any goals.

Regardless, it was an amazing game... just disappointing.

AlphaBraveoTango, they won because they/their coach adjusted, changed, and went for it all the way. Before Italy scored, the Germans were getting ready for the kick-offs! Come on, you are a semifinalist, so you give it your all. That is why Italy won!

Looked to me like Germany who also played a great game just sort of ran out of gas.

They scored two amazing goals right at the end of the game to go on and win. Plus, they are just better.

because they were so good...
i think the both teams were excellent..but the last 5 minutes were so unexpected.. i was watching the first goal on tv, i had complete concentration, but i didn't really realize that italy socred. it was just so unexpected. the second goal was like "woah, where did that come from"... i think it was just lesser concentration of germans and the over confidence...

119th minute they made a goal 121 minute stoppage time they made another goal 2-0 no penalty kicks just goals really fast. and for the ppl who say refs it had nothing to do with it the ref was really good he barely intervened in anything!
