my grandson asked me the question why is corn called an ear of corn. He is 6 years old. I didn't know what to tell him. I hope someone out there will know and I can tell him. Thank You.

Hmmm, you can't be a very old Grampa,,, or a farmer,,,no offense.

I'm old, and was born and raised a farmer.

Web sites weren't in existence then,,,no offense to another answer.

Corn Ears, are what old timers would describe as the look of the corn husk, adjacent to its neighbor, as it grows on a stalk.

corn has ears
potatoes have eyes


So when in the garden, be careful of what you say when near the corn. And when bending over, remember them taters can see you.
