Excellent question! Excellent answers! But I think they're all wrong.

It's absolutely correct that the Kingsmen released a song called Louie Louie in 1963. It was a big hit climbing to #2 and staying there for six weeks. Also correct, there was a tremendous controversy about the lyrics. The lyrics given above are the same ones I've seen on the Internet and they're probably right.

However, if the song you want has the lyrics " Louie Louie Louie Loueee, Louis Louis Louis Louwow, the song you really want is called Brother Louis. It was recorded by a group called Stories in June of 1973 and climbed to the #1 position on the Billboard charts.

Almost everyone remembers Louis Louis but Brother Louis, despite being a #1 record, has kind of slipped into the mist of time.

Here are the TRUE ORIGINAL lyrics to "Louie Louie" and contrary to comon belief, there is nothing more than this silly little song. It was originally written in 1956 and recorded by the Kingsmen 7 years later in 1963. The songwriter's name was Richard Berry.

The song was a HUGE hit, due to the mumbling that made it hard for people to make out exactly what was being said...and adults all over the country were SURE that it was DIRTY! Even an FCC investigated allegations of lewd lyrics...and never found a thing.

Mr. Berry was interviewed in Los Angeles by Bill Reed several years ago, and explains the song as the sad story of a seafaring man, spoken to a sympathetic bartender named Louie. Here, without further ado, are the "official" published lyrics:

"Louie Louie, me gotta go.
Louie Louie, me gotta go.
A fine little girl, she wait for me.
Me catch the ship across the sea.
I sailed the ship all alone.
I never think I'll make it home.
Louie Louie, me gotta go .
Three nights and days we sailed the sea.
Me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there.
I smell the rose in her hair.
Louie Louie, me gotta go.
Me see Jamaican moon above.
It won't be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again.
Louie Louie, me gotta go."
