Don't know the US one but in England there was a band called 'The Dave Clark 5' whose singer was Mike Smith. They had hits with Glad All Over, Bits and Pieces and Catch Us If You Can. When they got their 1st No 1 they replaced the Beatles and suddenly became famous as the Tottenham Sound (Tottenham is a district of London) but, unlike the Beatles only lasted for about 2 years. Dave Clark, who was the drummer in the band, however, was an astute businessman and bought all the T V rights to the pop shows at the time and made a fortune in royalties.

Dave Clark Five's keyboardist,lead singer was Mike Smith. I dont know the American one, who is it? The Monkees had Mike Nesmith, not Smith.

dave clark 5 and the monkees, the song bits and pieces was banned in coffee shops in the 60s cos people kept banging the cups on the saucers and broke them. (im full of rubbish info like that)
