Most docked tails on dogs are done on breeds that are considered to be "working breeds". For instance, Rottweilers have their tails docked because, long ago, they were used for both herding and carting. Their tails were docked so that they would not spook cattle as their owners used them to move cattle to market. Once the cattle were at market, they were butchered, and the dogs were used to haul the meat around on carts. In this case, the dogs' tails needed to be docked so that they wouldn't get caught in the wheels or moving parts of the cart. Rotties are no longer used in this capacity, and the docked tail has just been carried along as part of the breed standard.
Australian Shepherds have their tails docked so that they can blend in a bit more easily with the herd that they're tending. Also, without their tails, they're not as easily confused (by the human shepherd) with a dingo or coyote (which would be shot on sight).
In Germany, it is now against the law to dock the tail of a dog (this is in the home country of the Rottweiler, btw).

Its a prefrable thing to do to certian breeds.
It makes them show better and look better in general.
I dont agree with the practice at all. Even if it is done at a younger age its not like nerves have't developed in the tail and its going to hurt either way. And if they miss when cropping they can severely injure the dog.
Its insane what people will do just to make things look good.
Leave animals as nature made them, dont crop their ears and tails to make a profit. Don't senselessly kill to buy ONE fur coat that your going to wear once.
I hate humanity sometimes... :-/

Only when they are newborn, it is not that p[ainful as the bones havnt started to solidify. People do it mostly for their own sake, so their tail doesnt get caught on something and knock it down, or just to keep it out of the way.

I raise miniature schnauzers. I have their tails cropped right after birth. You have 3 days before their nervous system has developed into their tail. They hardly make a sound. A couple hours later they forgot all about it. If I wouldn't AKC would not recognize my puppies.

Are you talking about for show purposes? Well I think show dog people do it because they're friggin' psychopaths. I mean they're ruining the dogs genes by forcing inbreeding so much but they don't care as long as the dogs are pretty.

There are some breeds that have been the unfortunate victim of this horrible practice. It is done only for esthetic reasons.

Some breeds are susceptible to cancer, which can start in their tails. It's a preventive measure.
