2001 Seattle Mariners won 116 games setting an American League record.
1964 Philadelphia Phillies had a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 games to go and blew it, St. Louis won pennant.
1980 New York Yankees won 103 games and 1980 Baltimore Orioles won 100 but neither team went to World Series. I lived in New York City area this year.
1976 and 1977 Philadelphia Phillies

My choices would be the 1984 Chicago Cubs (were messed up by revised playoff schedule that had fewer games at Wrigley Field, which did not have its lights yet), and the 2001 Oakland Athletics, who won over 100 games and finished second to the Seattle Mariners, who won 116! (And the Steinbrenners knocked them both off - bah!)
The 1948 Red Sox come to mind (lost a one-game playoff to the Indians), as do several of the teams during the Ted WIlliams years. The best chance the Cubs had in the Ernie Banks era was 1969, but they were outplayed by the Mets. (The Cubs also contended in 1967 and 1968; pretty good after finishing in tenth place in 1966!) The 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers were pretty hot, but faded late in the season and were caught by the Giants, who nonetheless needed the Miracle of Coogan's Bluff to get into the World Series. (The Boys of Summer recovered from this disaster and went to the World Series four of the next five years, winning it in 1955.)
And a good case can be made for the 1904 Yankees, who scared the hell out of the Giants. They didn't quite win the AL pennant, but came so close that the owner of the Giants, John T. Brush, refused to agree to play in the still-new World Series that year. Brush made various proposals for future World Series (the "Brush rules," which are mostly still in use), and it became an annual event, surviving weather, wars, earthquakes and everything else - except the players' strike in 1994.

the 1988 mets deserve consideration here as well. they pretty much dominated the national league all season and faced the dodgers in the nlcs, a team they beat 10 of 11 times in the regular season. the dodgers however won that series and did go on to win the world series as well.

1993 Giants didn't even make the playoffs yet won 103 games because Atlanta won 104. That year the NL West was the best playoff race in any sport I have ever watched.
