To concentrate while studying...

I usually turn on classical music to calm me down.

I keep the TV on, but on mute. I find that having a still room with nothing going on makes me restless. So if I can see the TV blinking out of the corner of my eye, it stimulates me. Just make sure not to watch it! hahaha.

I usually take a Vitamin B (I think this is the one) that is supposed to help relax your nerves and calm you. It works for me!

I also politely ask my family members/friends not to bother me.

I wear comfortable clothing

I keep something by me to snack on, and some water

Basically, whatever relaxes you...

And REMEMBER!! If you are feeling overwhelmed, stop for a minute. Put your book down, close your eyes, and breath! Take long, deep breaths and remind yourself that you can do it! :) I find that subliminally complimenting myself gets my spirits up. 'You are doing a great job...Only a couple more pages and then you're done...studying is really going to help prepare you for the test...keep up the great work!'

It sounds crazy, but being optimistic and encouraging for yourself really helps for the motivation piece, and when someone is motivated to complete something, they often concentrate better. Look at sports players...their teammates and coaches are constantly rooting for them and cheering them on, and it gives them the extra "umph" that they need!

But most of all, don't forget that it is actually GOOD to take breaks in between studying. It is unhealthy to study a long time. I usually study for an hour, then take a 20-30 minute break, then go back and study more...

Another way to concentrate is to do it with a friend. Instead of cramming terms, talk about them with a friend. It will seem like more of a conversation rather than reading, so you may be able to concentrate on the topic better (especially if you can ask each other questions that instantly pop in your mind).

Good luck!! :)

Get some ritalin...haha, jk, well...sort of.

I listen to classical music or melodic music without words...sometimes nature sounds like rain or the ocean. This really relaxes me which in turn helps me to clear my mind and focus.

Also, before you start studying have a healthy, good sized meal, and drink a lot of water. I also take a multivitamin. You need to give your brain the resources and energy to go, go, go like you want it to!

Another helpful idea is to get a tape recorder and to record out loud whatever it is your studying. Read from the text, or your notecards, or ask a question and then pause and read the answer. Then, later on play this back and listen to it. Repetition is great for studying, and after studying material once or twice with heavy concentration, then you can play back the material with less focus, while you are doing other things, or even going to sleep! You will be amazed at how your subconscious cements the concepts into your mind even though you are not actively listening to it.

Good luck!

Best way to study from my experience is to study with a sincere and equally desirous friend where you read a portion for 10 minutes and ask him to question you then ask him to read for ten minutes and you ask him questions. Thereby concentration indirectly increases. Ofcourse as suggested by many a short break of ten minutes after one hour (Even TV serials do this:-) )is helpful to get rid of the mental fatigue. Some yoga breathing exercises (PRANAYAM) like deep breathing,"BHRAMARI Pranayam" andmeditation if done with a good and experienced teacher is useful for personal life where concentration is required apart from study only.

You have to take short breaks every 20 minutes. Study 20 minutes, take a 5 minute break. This gives your brain time to digest what you just studied. Also, if you finish a section, take a break. Again, this gives your brain a chance to assimilate what you just studied. I also find playing a little music to cut out other noises helps. I don't mean blasting your speakers, though, just softly in the background.

To concentrate while studying, you must cut out all the external stimuli, such as TV, radio, and telephone in the room. I study the best in the middle of the night. Then I go to bed and sleep a few hours, get up and voila it is all in my head. Give it a try.

Every couple of hours, take a twenty minute break - it lets your brain refresh itself. Maybe throw some cold water on your face and wear reading glasses so you don't strain your eyes.

Walk around and study...it increases the oxygen flow to your brain, helping you to remember things. Believe me, I thought it was weird at first, until I tried it and it really did work!
