I stayed up to see the 'first step', I was about 16. My parents went to bed! I never could understand that.
It was scripted, but he was supposed to say "One small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind". Oh well.

No way did Neil Armstrong land on the moon. Color TV was in 1 out of 10 homes no way could they get a spaceship to the moon.

Sorry to be (almost) off-topic, but how is it that so many people doubt something that clearly happened just 47 years ago and yet believe so strongly in something that probably did not happen 2000 years ago? Man, what I could do with that kind of PR control!
And yes, I believe NA's comments were "scripted" but by himself before he left.

Before the flight, a reporter asked him if he was planning to say something special and he said, no. But that interview got him to thinking and he decided he did need something to say, so he did plan that now famous line before the flight after all. At least I seem to recall hearing him say that once. I also seem to recall that he got help and advice from NASA, but my understanding was that the line was his, not written for him.

It was scripted by NASA. Neil Armstrong himself said " What is this crap" or " I have to say this crap?" . I can't remember but he definetly called the sentence crap.

It was scripted, but Armstrong made a boo-boo by saying, " . . . one small step for man . . ." The original script was to be " . . .one small step for a man. . .. "

It was written for him before they left.
And for the moron who said the moon landing never happened. Please tell us your joking. Because no one could be this stupid in real life!

It was not spontanious. He knew what he was going to say beforehand. If my memory serves me the words were his idea.
