Local DIY store says i need a whole new unit at £50. its the handle that spins on the spindle that has worn away so it doesnt turn off properly. Can anyone advise me if i can get a standard size fitting for this or is the local store just looking to get me to buy their new tap?

buy a tap reviver kit from your local plumb stop or plumbing supply store you can find a local one on yell.com they come complete with tap tops and in a pair Bristan is the best make I have found and can be fitted in half an hour if you have a screwdrivers and spanners to dismantle your old taps
But you may need to buy a reseating tool at the same time as the washer may not seat properly these just screw into the tap fitting after you have removed the old top and with pressure you turn them about 9 or 10 turns to clean the valve seat then screw in your replacment
don't overtighten or you may damage the rubber washer

depending on the type of taps you have, you could get a renovation kit from plumb centre. they cost about £13 +vat so they are not cheep either. two types are available normal and 1/4 turn you need the same as your taps. they come complete with new solid acrylic handles and they will solve your problem but if your not fused what your taps look like PTS (plumbing trade supplies) will sell you taps for about the same price. but if they have gone that far then maybe you should get the taps you have always dreamed of. haha. £50 is not too bad some taps can cost £200. best bet is to shop around. end of line is normally cheaper.

£50 not the end of the world, and you would have a new one, in the long term it may be the cheapest way to go.

getting the old one brazed, would do it but it would also cost nearly as much,

finding a second hand one, would stll probably cost at least £20 if it was in good condition, and you have to go and find one.

Personally I would pay the £50 and have a new one fitted, that kills the problem at the root or source.

Conclusion: NO MORE KITCHEN TAP DRIPPING.

I'm watching this question, I've got exactly the same problem and couldn't find the part sold seperately.

I found that by switching the hot and cold taps around solved it for me. Failing that you could try glue or a rubber band around the spindle to give it some grip.

Modern taps have a smaller inlet tube you will need to check against the old, you may need converters... also modern taps have ceramic washers... there are two types depending on water pressure... Can you hold the water back with your finger over the outlet, if yes it's low pressure.... very general test, not 100%
