Here's info for teen volunteers (Summer Youth Blitz Program) that includes the volunteer's payment for room and board:

"How much does the Summer Youth Blitz program cost?

Participants are responsible for their airfare to and from the designated airport, in addition to a $450 program fee that covers room and board and supplemental medical insurance during the program. There are a limited number of scholarships available."

And here's another page with info on international trips which includes room and board as part of the volunteer's responsibility:

A lot of the U.S. volunteer jobs are done locally with no requirement for housing volunteers as they live in the community where the projects are being worked on.

A friend of mine went abroad to help. She had to raise about $1500 to pay for the trip. I think Habitat for Humanity provided support to help her raise the money from friends/family/co-workers.
