I sometimes found this when I was using a floppy between Windows 9x (basically windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME) and those using the NT Kernel (windows NT, 2000, XP and various server versions). Try accessing using the same O/S used when you wrote the files. Alternatively I have no idea!

It's either damaged or you can try accessing the files from the same machine that you wrote the floppy disk files.

What they said. Disk is corrupt, so the drive assumes it's not formatted.
I think there are some Norton utilities that can sometimes rescue a few scraps of data off a disk - why not check them out? Beware: Norton stuff that does low-level things to disks can cause more damage than it fixes (bitter experience)

you can try data recovery programs but most will not recover the data as your pc is failing to recognise the floppy
you will just have to accept that it is lost and use another type of storage
memory sticks are fine but make a copy on to another backup like a cd on a regular basis
I used a memory stick and when I tried to use it on a oldish dell to demonstrate it worked fine till I put it back in my PC when I got the same as you have and no amount of trying would work
I will watch and see if you get a solution maybe it will work for me

You are pretty stuffed. Was the floppy created on another machine? Sometimes they will read on the original machine, what you need to do is load them back, then take a floppy formatted on your machine, and recopy them.
If it was created on yours anyway, then I am afraid that it sounds like it has become corrupt.

If it says it need formatting then that means there are no files on it. Its either been too close to a magnet and wiped or it was never formatted in the first place.

go to below link and download their freeware data recovery tool, when inserted follow instruction to chose the floppy drive it will recover most if not all of your data,
then save it to pc and use a new floppy disk to transfer to it,
THROW AWAY the floppy when you retrieve your data, it is banjacksed.
