note: the vague rule reason is not valid as american football has vague rules such as the tuck rule
note: the can not see the puck reason is not valid- as my question pertains to live action... it is understood that hockey is the hardest sport to televise
note: additional question of does the good guy mentality hurt hockey since you do not here once or twice a week that a prominent player has beat his wife, gotten a DUI, or drug charges?

hockey to me is the greatest sport of all times but still football (soccer) is #1 and hockey is #2 sports in the world.. baseball amercan football (should be called handball) and basketball are not even close to competing in a world stage such as football (soccer) and hockey if you can't follow the puck then you must like more slower games like baseball and american football which are very slow..

It depends on the area of the US. The east is good for hockey, hockey is pretty popular over there. The west is not at all, I live in Utah and growing up, you know one of the only chances of going pro is to move back east(Minnesota, Michigan) or Canada. But i think one of the reasons hockey is unpopular is because we have a variety of sports that were much more popular before hockey. That means parents tought there children about baseball, basketball, football, so a lot more people are interested in them. Another thing I see is that some people watch hockey for the skill and speed while others just watch it to see people beat the &*^% out of each other. If the league lets them fight all the time, you lose the loyal fans that like the sport. If the league tries to stop fighting and cheap shots, they lose people that go to the games to see that. You would be amazed how many people think hockey is all about fighting and checking and that it requires no skills.

I think the American market is a great one but the producers of network coverage have no clue how to televise the game. They keep dumbing down to an audience at the cost of insulting knowledgeable fans. I'd love to be able to get Hockey Night in Canada rather than the OLN or whatever it will be called. The game should be able to flourish anywhere, but the NHL expanded too quickly. It is still a regionally followed sport and any growth into the southern market has to be careful. If a team leaves Minnesota, that needs to be addressed, but if a team leaves Atlanta, who cares?

Only an American would say hockey is boring, Russians love hockey, th finns, the sweeds and of course it is life and death hee in Canada. Alot of people will argue they can't see the puck and i say how hard is it to see a black disc on white ice. I feel the amount of stupid penalties has drastically slowed the game down but the playrs life spans will be longer. Plus there is a conspiracy to keep the cup out of canada to keep the american fans interested.

Hope I helped

It's not unpopular in Canada, Russia and various ex-USSR republics, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland and certain states in the U.S.

Honestly, who cares whether the U.S. ever grasps the game as a nation? Baseball is a regional sport now (have you seen the World Series ratings the past decade bar the Red Sox year) and does fine.

Anyhoo, hockey wil never be hugely popular in the U.S. as a whole but its; danged popular in Minnesota, Michigan, New England and the NY area (to a degree). Good enough for me. Plus some of the new markets sell out their buildings--Columbus, Tampa (now), San Jose and so on.

I am from Hockey Town which is Detroit Mi.
We have more youth hockey going on here every year in a lot of our communities. As for the AHL and the NHL we always pack the stands and sell tons of paraphernalia.
You cant go anywhere around the state without seeing Red Wings stuff on cars people homes businesses or whatever.
And that's just here there are lots of places that are like we are with their teams.
What makes you think hockey is unpopular?

Hi, I've never seen a hockey game. But, I do love playing hockey especially on Rollerblades. I like the fact that your exercising your feet and your hands when you play, and its good practice for concentration- following the puck. Overall, I think its my best sport. I wouldn't say its unpopular, however, it could be that other sports are just more popular.

Because people believe the all american sport is football and before they believed it was football it was believed to be baseball. Since those were the true american sports thats what many kids started to play and hockey was not as popular in the US as it was in Canada and say Russia.

i imagine its because hockey isn't a "p.c.. up and play" interest. Baseball would properly be performed with broomsticks and rocks. For football, basketball, and football, all you want is a ball and human beings. To play hockey notwithstanding, you for sure favor ice, besides as skates, sticks, safe practices for goalies, and known you in straight forward words favor extra kit to play it. This makes it extra sturdy for city youngsters to play, even as that is way less severe priced and a lot less difficult to get kit for basketball or baseball. The hockey centre of the States is the Northeast, and alongside the Canadian border in places like Minnesota and Michigan. it really is because it receives chilly there. It does no longer get chilly in Florida or Alabama, so its demanding for the neighbourhood youngsters to pass play pond hockey all day. besides, usa of america loves a winner. it would not remember what that is, in case you win at what you do, usa of america will continually assist you. this is why basketball, NASCAR and football are so prevalent contained in america of a. human beings have continually been the desirable accessible in those activities. the upward push of Asian and Latin baseball gamers has also considered the decline of baseball's popularity contained in the States, as human beings at the instantaneous are no longer the desirable accessible. human beings have become extra efficient at football, and now, football is growing to be in popularity. with slightly of luck with contemporary American fulfillment in hockey (Olympic medals, international Junior Champions, etc), the desirable interest in the international will extremely take off contained in america of a.
