There's a new trend out that involves eliminating middle schools (6-8) and returning those students to elementary school. What do you think about that? Should young adolescents have the opportunity to avoid the dreaded middle school and have the comfort of elementary school for nine years?

I did a report on this concept and according my research, 6-8 students that were in a K-8 school rather than a separate middle school had fewer behavioral problems, higher achievment in several subject areas, and even a higher enjoyment of school. Schools also found them to be positive role models for younger students and parents were more involved in their child's school.

The research that has been done recently does support K-8 schools. That is why our school has already converted back to a K-8 building while most of the others in my district will follow. One big problem our district had is that no one could control the large numbers of middle school students in one place. By spreading them out, the behavior has improved. Many of us,(teachers) were concerned for the safety of the younger students but so far, nothing has happened. Another advantage is that the students already know us. They don't have to get used to an entirely new group of teachers. I have to say I dreaded it when we were told it was coming, but I think it has worked out well. One problem I have seen is that the students seem to miss out on some of the specialized classes such as home ec and wood shop.We don't have room for them and they would hire teachers for just a few hours a day to teach those subjects. I think they miss out on that.

I'd have to say no. young adolescents need to be away from the elementary scene.. it's a preteen stage in life that every person goes through. it prepares them for high school..

not only that, but mixing such young children with preteens doesnt exactly work well. the younger ones will be picking up what they see/ hear from the preteens.. and for the preteens, they will never learn to be prepared for high school. you cant go from elementary to high school.. how would that work?

NO ....Our youngest son will be a freshman in high school this fall. His so called "dreaded" middle school experience was a great transition from grammer school. I am truely hoping the high school transition will be as smooth. 6-8th grades are a big tranfer period in these developing kids and I don't think it should go back to grade school.

No! You gradually move up. Elementary, then junior high, then high school. How would some people feel if they immediately jumped from elementary to high school?

I don`t know. =\ I`m glad I already graduated
