The United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7,200,000 in 1867.

It was generally considered a bad deal for the United States. Secretary of State William Seward was mocked as an idiot for buying what was considered a frozen wasteland.

The newspapers described it as "Seward's Folly." The New York World said that it was a "sucked orange." The New York Tribune described it as "a frozen wilderness".

One might observe that this was neither the first nor the last time that the media would prove to be a bunch of halfwits or that public opinion would be shown to be worthless.

Alaska was controlled by Russia. They needed to sell it to finance their wars with the Ottomans. They originally offered it to England, to become part of Canada. England refused, as it was not in their interests to have a stronger Russia. The US then bought it.
