Lava fields form when lava flows harden and cool. There are two major types of lava in Hawai'i: pahoehoe lava is ropy and smooth, a'a lava is more viscous and less smooth than pahoehoe and usually has large, rough and spiky chunks of scoria in its surface. The volcano erupts and molten lava, which is a form of melted stone (pumice) begins to spew out of the crater. It flows downhill very hot and liquid. The longer it is in the open air, the cooler it gets. It then begins to solidify and as it does it looks like the sand on the beach with ripples on it. It then hardens. If it ends on a flat level area before cooling, it gives the appearance of a field made from lava.....................

lava is melted rock belched up from deep within the earth.
when enough lava is sent up to cover a large surface
before it cools a lava field is formed.
