If the cabin decompresses, you will need to supplement your oxygen supply through the masks.

They are not for normal use, and only descend in emergency situations.

I think you've watched Fight Club one too many times....

When people panic, they tend to breath heavier, and the cabin has only so much air. On the chance that the plane actually does land, it would be ironic if you died because of oxygen deprivation.

Further, if the cabin was or does get hit, or a pressure drop causes a loss of oxygen in the cabin or something else causes loss of internal oxygen to the cabin as the plane tries to land.... whatever the circumstances might be, you have another ready source to breath from. You can not breath the air once you are at certain altitude above the ground.

Sure it may relax you a bit, but any relaxation is just a side effect. Its not an intentional benefit.

No. They are a safty feature with a back-up oxagen system. If the plain was to suffer any damage, a pressure drop would make the cabin unbreathable, so the mask comes to provide safe pressuered oxagen. The myth sounds like the unfounded myth that the crach position is designed to kill you becouse it's cheaper to pay a death suit then life long cases. Th4e mack is not to relax you.

Just in case the plane loses altitude and the Oxygen level in the plane falls those little masks drop down and hopefully save your life.

In case the cabin pressure deregulates and you can no longer breathe the right amount of oxygen. They only drop in emergency and some how I doubt they will relax you : )

Above 12,000 feet there isn't enough air to breath, The oxygen masks are so you can breath while the plane descends to below 12,000 feet if there is an emergency

If the mask dropped down, I would be anything but relaxed. Breathing in an altitude drop is good, very good.

It's so you can still breathe if the cabin is depressurized...without the mask, the air is too thin & you'll die.
