Best shade grass would be creeping red fescue. It's shade tolerant.

Grass does not grow well under trees. Trees put out most of their roots in the top 18" of the soil so it will be competing with the grass for water; the tree will win and you'll end up with patchy grass.
If you want to plant something under a tree try hostas or ferns. But remember you've got a lot of roots to dig through to be able to plant them so it would be best to find the smalled hosta or fern available. It will be easier to dig a 4" hole rather than a galllon size and it will save $. And try to plant at least 2-3 feet away from the truck of the tree, as the tree grows the trunk will too and that is where the largest roots are.

I could never grow any type of grass under Heinrich, my beautiful X-Mas tree pine that my hubby gave me for our first Christmas. I've had it 15 years and it is now well over 2 stories tall. I planted vinca under it and I love it. It is a vine that produces beautiful blue flowers and hides all of the pine needles so I never have to clean them up or even see them. It seems to thrive without the sunlight and has even encroached upon the grass and stone pathway next to it. Every now and again, I have my hubby take the bush wacker to it just to restrain its growth into areas that I don't want it. I started with 4 one gallon plants that cost me $2.99 a piece. It is a great solution here.

You may want to abort the grass idea and go with a Hosta garden instead.
