Round Rock is north of Austin and is a good family area. The west side of Austin is in the "hill country" and is very nice. A little pricey for the area, but still reasonable compared to the rest of the country. Southeast Austin is a little less desireable. It really all depends on what your price range and school requirements. Lake Austin area and the hill country are the best locations around Austin. Any realtor will know where these areas are. Most all of Round Rock is a nice and safe place to live and not very far from downtown Austin.

Now that Depends on what you're into.
North Austin fast paced allot of businesses.
South Austin medium paced, more residential.
East Austin slow paced, more of lower income people live in that area, parks and very beautiful
West Austin, more land area, mainly the lakes, the very rich(any nationality),gorgeous. Takes time to get to point B from point A.
Central Austin very little residential, this is the area where everyone comes to party. During the week, the pace is steady, the weekends, it's the bomb.
