There are a lot of household items that can be used for this purpose, but you have to be careful in choosing which ones. They should be rounded and not have anything on the sides that could cut you.

The ones I've personally used are sharpie markers and the thunderstick training bat. The jumbo sharpies are the best on this front, and you can start with one then add more as you feel comfortable with the size; you might even want to start with regular sharpies to get used to it.
