A sort of engine that can use any heat source just needs to have a differential of temp between outer and inner core. Theory way it was being designed same time as internal combustion engine and well Betamax vs VHS.. But supposedly could use anything for heat ie wood, coal..etc not just gasoline.. Just wondering .Would be nice to have gone that route ( as would have been with Betamax much better vcr) but..

The Sterling was actually invented in 1816 and has been tinkered with since. This link has good information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stirling_engine

The Sterling is being used even today in numerous programs, but why it is not replacing the power units in cars, trucks, planes and trains is not stated. I am certain that there are logistics to overcome, perhaps weight and/or space, likely largely the cost but with energy cost raising, no doubt the American way is to rise to the occasion and come up with a solution- unless Al Gore is successful with his programs and cans progress, as he and his like have stopped us in the name of "environmentalism" from drilling or mining for resources on our own soils.

I don't know, I'd like to know more about this. I'm assuming it wasn't very efficient, as I imagine it would not be. But there are ways of producing more intense heat now. It should be looked into.
