First off, by virtue of having created a work, you own the copyright. To keep it, first you need to put the c in a circle and/or the word copyright, with the year and your name/trade name next to the photograph wherever it is displayed/published. To register the copyright, you will need to fill out a form and file the photograph with the Copyright Office. For forms, and information, go to www.copyright.gov.

This refers to US law. Note I am not a lawyer.
Current copyright law gives the creator of a work copyright upon creation. Once you click it, you have the copyright on it.
Now, if you need proof of copyright, you can register the copyright with the US Copyright office (http://www.copyright.gov) for a small fee. You'll get a certificate which comes in mighty handy if you need to prove ownership of a work.

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 2 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
