because people are stereotypical and thats what the think emo's like because a lot of people say so when they really dont know what it is

i'm emo/goth sure there's a huge difference and that i'm a blend of both... My dad calls me emish, i'm waiting for that to seize on haha... Emos are large the type rocks alongside with the flavor in music and obviously emo is created by utilizing complicated lives or pasts besides the undeniable fact that, this does no longer advise we are consistently unhappy and depressed we do smile!!

they assume that for the same reason they assume everything else thats steriotypical. A few people do something and they think everyone else who looks like them must to.
Emo isn't even a type of person, its a type of music and a style. People are people, not genres and styles.

Most emo bands I have heard also identified as gay. I guess it's like assuming men who like showtunes are gay...

It's kinda just the image they've given themselves: guys wearing girls' jeans, talking about death, boys kissing boys, that sort of thing. At least, that's what it's like in my town.
