Actually, Reno is West of Los Angeles. look at a map.
Reno is 119.77 longitude
LA is 118.22 longitude
That put LA East of Reno

Reno is EAST of Los Angeles by just a few degrees of longitude. If your map places Reno to the west of Los Angeles, you may be looking at the wrong type of map projection: the Mercator projection that sailors use is very common, but the land masses are extremely distorted. I suggest looking at a Robinson projection of the map (that's the one that looks like a flattened globe).

Reno is maybe 50 - 75 miles west of L.A. but close to 400 miles north.
