They are not mating, there is lots of room, including an island (which is much bigger than the two of them) and they still stack up.

I have seen this in the wild, I believe they compete for the highest point in the water, a rock or log, to watch for predators, and to get the best basking advantage.
It's quite entertaining to see a turtle on the bottom of the pile make fast moves, there are turtle shells sliding and diving every which way.

It's normal behaviour... turtles are cold blooded and they need external heat. SO, the closer you are to the lamp, the more heat you receive. No matter how big of a bulb (wattage), they will always want hotter. I usually use a 75-100 W bulb at 10" away.

Anyway, they are just chillin' and enjoy your turtle pile! Take pics, it's always fun to watch, especially when they all tumble down. :)

P.S. When they mate, they mate in water.

Either they are mating, or they want to get out of the water for a little bit(do you have a large rock or something that they can clime to?)If you don't look for something, they like to go out of the water sometimes(mine do)

I used to have two red eared sliders. They try to dry out and they like to get warm sometimes...so they pile up on eachother to get warmer or completely out of the water/off of the ground...I know..strange!

They might be cold, or not have enough room. Talk to your vet about your turtle area set-up to see if it is sufficient for your turtles!
