There is no substitute for education. Like anything else you have to study the game. Learn about its' history. It's the only way. The do's would include being accurate in everything you do. The don't is not to take short cuts in the learning process. It will only hurt you in the long run. The best way to get started is to first hook up with a local newspaper and join the sports department. Work your way up and do some reporting. While you're doing that go to college and work toward a degree in journalism. If you're good, and there is no reason to think that you won't be, you'll end up doing exactly want you want. It worked for me!!!

Go to college. Take classes that study history and past cultures. Anthropology is a good field. Put together some interesting research and try to get it published. Try interning with Major League Baseball or even the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. They have a great library there.

Your first option would be to check out SABR (The Society for American Baseball Research), it'll cost you a fee to join, but they release annual journals and produce a number of pretty cool books and publications. Some of the articles can get rather esoteric, but overall it's a good way to get a feel for what topics are hot, and what general trends are interesting.

That's the first thing you should do.
