Sorry to disillusion you, but I think most people do it for the points.
However, I also think that some people just can't help getting riled. There are some really revolting questions on here and instead of just ignoring the question, people feel driven to berate the asker.
funny how we all know how to improve the quality of questions: namely by only answering worthwhile ones, but we just can't help sticking our oar in at the first opportunity.
I like your question though, and the responses pretty much say it all.

I suppose there are some people out there who just answer for the points I skip around looking for answers that will possibly help the person who asked the question. I have only been on yahoo for a few weeks I was having a bad time at work and stumbled upon this site, I got tons of advice and realised that there are people out there who do actually care, I hope this answers your question

I know exactly what you mean, and I hope you dont think Im jsut answering for the points. But I always see people answering with "I don't know." or stupid stuff like that. I also hate it when people tell me to go to a website when I ask a question.

people like answering questions - it gets them noticed and gives them a sense of identity.
the questions that don't need answers are the easiest ones to answer - you can just post any old shoo.
so you get yourself noticed - and you don't even need to think about what you are doing.
which is what i am doing now.
