There's this person who makes websites and complains about tv networks or shows that have "jumped the shark." Nickelodeon comes to mind specifically. They put down the current shows, even good ones. Who is this? and who the heck says "jump the shark?"

Jon Hein is the creator of JumpTheShark.com, which was recently sold to TV Guide's parent company. He's the man behind the phenomenon of debating when certain programs have "jumped."

"Jump the shark" is an expression that means the point at which a TV show has reached its peak, and that from that moment on, it will all be downhill from there. It came from the series "Happy Days" where a character named Fonzie actually jumped a shark in an underwater pen while waterskiing. It was a terrible moment from a terrible episode from what had been a wonderful TV show. The show went downhill from there. It has now come to mean the moment at which a TV show stops being good. A common "jump the shark" moment is when a new baby or child is added to a show, like with Family Ties, Growing Pains, Brady Bunch, Cosby Show, Married... With Children, etc.

It doesn't mean that a show is all bad, it just means that the best episodes of the show are in the past.
