A friend called and asked me to translate it to a number, but XXL doesn't make sense as a roman numeral. What is it?

As a clothing size it can braodly be translated to 42 ("eXtra eXtra Large). As a roman numeral, XXL = 30 = XXX. In roman numerals, a trailing numeral represents addition where as a leading one means subtraction. So theoretically, you could rifht XXL for 30.

X is 10, and L is 50......

two x's before L is 30
XXL is 30, if XXL was a roman numeral

XXL is used in the shoe industry. It stands for extra extra large.
Roman numerals never used X or L because emperor Tiberius
who invented Roman numerals did want these confused with
the number 10 and 50.

XXL is NOT a correct Roman Numeral set. When the smaller numeral precedes a larger one, it is subtracted from the larger, but only ONE numeral can be subtracted. As a clothing size or t-shirt emblem it's okay, but it is definately NOT a Roman Number.

It's not a correct representation of Roman numerals so as mentioned, XXL could be "double extra large." Number 70 as a Roman would be LXX. As 30 it would be XXX.

XXL IS ONLY CORRECT AS A SIZE DENOTATION MEANING EXTRA EXTRA (DOUBLE X) LARGE. It is not a correct numeric configuration because rules stipulate only one smaller number may be positioned in front of a larger, not two as would be the case for "ten, ten, fifty". The correct Roman numeral for Arabic "30", would be "XXX".
