This isn't a specific question, but I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at. Is this type of character common among Mexican natives. Would it be acceptable if I were to go to Mexico City, stand on a street corner in a red, white, and blue shirt and shout "Hotdogs! Hotdogs! Hotdogs!" I really do not understand their culture and I am curious. Please don't respond with any liberal "I hate america" crap. An honest question.

By the way she has gold-capped teeth. And as to your advertising responses, she is literally shouting this across the whole neighborhood like "news team...assemble!".

It's just a way to get people's attention. It's much worse in Asia. I sometimes want to put in earplugs when I go to Japan. There really is such a thing as noise pollution.

I don't really know how to answer this question but the only thing i can say is that after working with the Hispanic community for almost 4 years is that this is common among Mexicans. For them they worked hard to make the tamales. They are a lot of work and take a long time to make. She wants to to see that she has made some and she would love to see you try some. You then are showing her that all of her hard work is appreciated and they taste good. In Mexico they would not care what you sold or what you wore there are as many Americans there as there are Mexicans here. Just appreciate her hard work in making them and remember that she is trying to make money to help her family. For many Mexican woman thus is the only way they can help support the family.

same reason the vendors at baseball games shout "get your hotdogs and peanut!!!" try to get peoples attention to buy from her so she can be heard over traffic. Another reason she might be shouting is due to what is show in the media. Americans have to be loud and obnoxious, ie. jerry springer show . Alot of people judge this country by what is shown to them on television sadly violence, sex, and loud behahior gets the most ratings and so were branded with this sterotype. Not all mexican vendors shout most post signs and wait patiently for the customers. If you really want to understand any culture try talking to them . But make sure you talk to a wide variety so you can get a better picture instead of one point of view.

That's what they do, they yell to let know everyone what they are selling, it is a common character in Mexico, they use different things to promote their products, things like a whistle , a bell, two sticks, a lot of things, they walk the streets selling , quesadillas, vegetables, fruit, dishes like pots, I can't tell you all the different items they sell over there, not only food, services like the guy who sharps your knifes, or a the guy who fixes your pipes, sometimes when people needs something or someone all they have to do is wait for a scream or a sound, and then they know who is passing by , but that costume is dying in Mexico, Every year there are less and less of this guys.

It is NOT "tomales", oh Great One. It is "tamales". And about your question, why are you surprised because she shouts what she sells ?
How do you do it ? Place an ad on the newspaper ?

She's selling Tamales. Thats probably why she's shouting "tamales!". They have people on the corners in mexico selling stuff too. I don't think it has to do with culture either. She's just selling her tamales. You should go buy one. They're yummy!

Its a form of advertising for them. Don't bash it, these people are making a living just like you and me. Some of us have to work harder than some. Thats how they make their living and why not shout that you have something available. That way people near by can have easy access to you plus its direct.

Because it's the way of attracting people to her tamales. It's probably the best way she can make a decent living. They probably better than anything you can buy in the store because they would be authentic.
