ok most people calloverdrive an extra gear this is not the case. what happens in overdrive is that you will usally be at a cruise speed 45 and up. you will notice that engine speed drops. what happens inside the transmission is that the torque converter speed locks and the engine and the transmission are 1 to 1 speed ration. so you have no lose of engine power and in return better fuel milage . just remember that you should not tow in overdrive.

Because the drive gear is regulated to the engine HP at an ideal rate in which the car driven at highway speed will exert minimum force to maintain this speed. If your engine is turning 1500 RPMs (less than normal) it will most likely get worse fuel economy as you have to have your foot on the floor going up hills. So, not always true with the RPM theory that your getting.

Because the overdrive allows the engine to operate at lower RMPs.
The slower the motor turns, the less fuel you use!

Because your overdrive gear is your high gear and you should be in it anyway if you are going over 40 (in general) If you don't put it in overdrive at higher speeds, you are lugging your engine.

what over drive is is an extra gear in ur transmission,or it locks ur torqconverter, thus at say 55 mph ur motor is only doing say 1500 rpm instead fo say 2500 rpm without overdrive.
