EVERY, teacher regardless of the subject he/she teaches, MUST have excellent communication skills. I was in education for 40 years. Of those years, I was a high school principal for 14 years. There I supervised and evaluated many teachers who knew their subject well, who had a passion for their subject, but who could NOT communicate at a level where high school students could understand and learn. In addition, teachers serve as models for the students they teach. Therefore, it is important that they speak and write well. Any skill required in a teacher's classroom makes it mandatory that the teacher teach that skill!! For example, in your case, word problems require a close and accurate reading of the problem in order to set it up. Therefore, YOU need to show and explain to your students that word problems are directly related to their ability to read.
Good luck.

I think communication skills are very important for teachers, not only do the classes help you understand the social norms but they help you learn how to communicate on different levels. I think that the communications class itself DOES hold important lessons... if you're talking to the class (for one of your speeches) and find you aren’t comfortable in front of people then you'll need to work on that. I would base the language skills on the age of your students. If you’re teaching college or even high school, then yes, words are important, and you need to know what you’re talking about, students are very good at reading a professor/teacher and can tell if you know what you’re talking about. Communications class doesn’t only teach words and how to speak in front of people, it teaches you the nonverbal signals as well, and children are very good at reading nonverbal signals, and can tell if you're not into the lesson. Find a way to connect with the kids, use the same language as they do, but make sure you’re using it the right way or they’ll think you’re a dork…lol
You are there to teach them things that they need to know to make it in life so with out communication skills, then how are you going to teach them?

Absolutely! I had a reading, writing, and spelling teacher in sixth and seventh grade that could not speak properly to save her life! During spelling tests, where she would call out the word and we would write it down, we were all confused! Once we studied and knew the list we could make out what she was saying, but if you didn't, you were screwed!
I hear how some of my students talk, and their parents, and it's quite scary!

Yes, communication skills are extremely important for teachers. They need to remember that communication doesn't just refer to their talking to their students. It involves speaking, listening, writing, critical thinking, analysis, etc. While it's important to model appropriate communication techniques, it's equally important to allow students to communicate their thoughts without our feeling the constant need to correct their every utterance or rape every piece of their writing with a red pen.

Yeah definatly.. the kids need a good example.. I mean my grammer can be bad sometimes because I had an English teacher that used words like funner, gooder and other words. And the other teachers would always have to correct him. And he asked us once how to spell rely. You need to know how to use and spell words. And you need to know how to talk to the kids

If you don't have good communication skills, how are you going to teach your students? You have to be able to communicate the information you are teaching them in such a way that they will be able to understand it.
