If the government revealed the truth, would civilization collapse?

Let's suppose that there were time-travelling interdimensional humans, returning to earth from the far future. Or let's suppose there is a race of homo sapiens relatives who's once-mighty civilization fell to ruin hundreds of thousands of years ago after they left this planet. Or let's suppose that the Earth itself was seeded by some mighty civilization from outerspace, and left to evolve on it's own. Either way, there's SOMEONE out there that visits this world and has an interest in us. Would it end society to know the truth about this stuff? If we were all clued into whatever is going on, couldn't we address the questions head on? If it turns out that there's clear evidence of an unexplored natural order (some a-causal model of the universe [ie The Matrix]) can't we just know? If there's flat proof that what we believe is wrong, then I d@mn well want to know about it. Prove to me there's no God, prove to me I'm a computer simulation. I don't CARE. I want to know the truth!

I believe ... well, say for instance, if the Roswell crash had been acknowledged for what many believe it was... at that point in time (WWII) it would have caused wide spread panic without doubt.

Now, it might to serve to wake the general world populace to the concept of planetary citizenship, which would go a long way towards getting all this diversity in cultures and beliefs to start working Together on our problems.

To discover we are locked in a "Matrix" situation, that we are a Sirius science project or that the 'truth' is something that invalidates the very framework of our basic belief systems... Yeah, personally, I would like to know, but I think generally it would cause world chaos for lots of reasons. Many might take it as license to do the darkest deeds of their imagining with the excuse of "What could it matter? None of this is real anyway!"

Individuals are caring, thinking creatures, but masses of people are frightened panicky animals of the worst sort. Even if there is hard evidence of any of what you bring up... leaders are forced to consider not only how the knowledge will affect the general populace, but its impact on societal structure, economics and more. To release new technology into the mainstream too fast could cause serious problems on many fronts such as the loss of jobs for those displaced by greater efficiency, for just one example.

The other side of that coin is the fact that in an earlier day (even as late as the turn of the 20th century) most knowledge available and new discoveries were publicly available, discussed and often worked on by 'laymen', not scientists isolated in highly guarded labs. There were great advances made due to the sheer diversity of thought and methods applied. Maybe we have lost something precious by not allowing people to know and think for themselves what they will when they have truth to work with. If you over protect a child, it is ill-equipped to face life as it really is... If you over govern or protect a society, even if the people demand that protection, you cripple their development as a species and as an evolving part of a greater whole.

"The truth will set you free." This phrase may hold more importance than we have yet realized. Chaos or no... I vote for truth and am willing to face the consequences!

My plan for stopping the Islama-fascist terrorists in the Middle East is to expose the fact that aliens exist. If we can prove that their ideas about religion are totally bogus, they couldn't use religion as a pretext anymore. If their ideas about Mohammed and Allah are just fairy tales, they couldn't use their religion as justification for terrorism.

From a Mormon point of view, I believe there is more to life than meets the eye. It's not a big science fiction story, but there are beings from other realms of existence. We are also from another realm of existence called the pre-mortal life. We existed as intelligent, beautiful daughters and sons of God, and we progressed to the point that we wanted to keep growing. Under the direction of God the Father, Jesus Christ created a physical earth for us to come to learn and grow by faith. This is a strong doctrine, by the way, and once you decide to believe it, even if you only have a desire to believe it, it will change your life until you start to see yourself and others very differently.
