I have heard that the tests and pelvic exam at your first ob/gyn appt. are pretty overwhelming. I'll be 8 weeks by the time I go. Will I be able to hear the heart beat yet?

It can be overwhelming being your first visit.
They will ask you 100 questions about everything. It can get Embarrassing, but very important. (medical history, family history, any miscarriages, age you started your period, had sex, all that good stuff)
They will do a pelvic exam with a pap smear. (It is to check for cancer and any abnormalities).. you can look up online the procedure, if you aren't certain.
Depending on your Dr. they may or may not prick your finger for an iron check. My first Dr. did at every appt. My last 2 Drs. did not.

They will also check your urine to make sure you don't have any problems there such as urinary tract infections, which are common during pregnancy.
They will probably do a breast exam to rule out any lumps. It only takes a few minutes.
They will probably try for the heartbeat with their doppler. It may or may not catch it yet. Some can pick it up as early as 8 weeks. Some take up to 13 weeks.

Finally you will be sent for bloodwork to check for blood type and immunity to common diseases.

Hope that helps. Good Luck. Best advice is just to stay calm. It will be over before you know it.

Congratulations! Babies are so wonderful! You should be able to hear your baby's heart beat by eight weeks. Your doctor will hook you up to the doppler machine which has a screen whereby you can see the figure of the baby (ultrasound) and place a belt over your abdomen. It has a mike system and you should be able to not only 'see' the rhythm of the heartbeat, but you will hear it - nice and strong. If you have ever had pap smear, you already know what that's like. Depending upon the condition of your cervix and uterus, your discomfort should be minimal. It will not hurt the baby, but they doctor will want to know the position of your cervix/uterus (some women are tilted and doctor's need to know). They will want to measure the size of your uterus/cervix and determine just how big your little intended can get inside there. It should not be too bad. It will be a breeze after that. My suggestion is that you relax, breath deeply and concentrate on happy thoughts. Best wishes to you and yours.

On your first visit, the doctor will probably take a urine and maybe a blood test to confirm your pregnancy., they will give you your due date and depending on your doctor, they will schedule your first sonogram... I had my first sonogram at 8 weeks exactly., and I could not believe how big the baby is.. I saw his/her head feet and hands building.., they are like small buds.. but you will be able to see his body and his heart beating.. My baby's heart beat was at 171 beats per minute... If you go by the old tales a heart beat more than 140 is a girl, less than 140 is a boy.. ask just for fun... good luck

your dr might try but at that point it may be hard to find it because the baby is so small. you can expect a pelvic exam that is pretty overwhelming if it is your 1st. depending on your dr. you will also get a breast exam as well as blood work done. good luck with your pregnancy.
