My 5 weeks old baby hates to burp. After every feed when I try to burp him, he would either fall asleep and don't burp at all or struggles with me (whining & crying) If I am lucky, I easily gets a burp right after his feed, if not I can try 30minutes and still no burp. In the end I have to hold him upright for 15-20 mins before putting him in the lying down position. Any better ways?

my son got the same problem and this for more than 2 monthes untill we noticed that he had oesophagus reflux.
Each time i feeded him they were no burps, sometimes he woke up crying with pain and finally perhaps after very longs minutes he burped .Then after that he wanted everytime to be breastfeeded ( needed to ease the pain) as he felt asleep it hapened again...
In fact the air could not go out because at the same time he had oesophagus reflux (the stomach was not mature enough to contain what he had eaten and close properly and the acidity come above...)so air breathed during feeding(blurps) and reflux were stopped in the oesophagus no burps going out and many cries because very uncomfortable and painfull...

Ask your doctor about oesophagus Reflux maybe i'll help your baby if this is one of the causes...
Be reassured it's not rare and onbthe contrary it's very common and the only thing to do is that baby must take PREPULSID before eating (it will work on stomach) and Gaviscon after(the effect of these one will be like a thin film on top of what as been eating to stop food or acidity to damage his oesophagus.)

you'll see that he will after that, burps easilly and whithout pain ;-)

Try laying him on your lap and burping him. Lay him across your legs. You may not be burping him firmly enough either, trust me you won't hurt him but you need to be firm about it. Also try when you are burping him start at the top of his back and then work your way down towards his bottom. That is how nursing homes help the elderly when they have problems going to that bathroom and it may help him to burp or if you are still having a hard time, change his formula. I like Carnation Good start, it works great and it is powder, so you can have it measured in a bottle beside you, then fill it with room temp spring water.

My husband has a terrific technique where he would rub the back from the bottom up (hard )and than give a pat when he got to the top of the back. repeat this process..What it does for children that are hard to burp is it works the burp up!!! My children were all hard to burp..I have 5 from 22 down to 12 months..I was told by a doctor my sis inlaw said sometime if children don't burp it is because they don't have to......But I would definetly keep doing what you are doing I did the same when they wouldn't burp I held them upright fo 20 min so they could digest...

did u try rubbing his back? Every baby is different. But I had tried all diffrent types of ways...like lying my baby on her stomach, just rocking her, not you, but her up and down movements, but most important you the mother has to be calm, relaxed and very comfortable. If you aren't the baby can sense some kind of stress from you and can hold it in. Which can cause bellyaches. If you still can't get your baby to burp than ask your doctor, also your baby might not need to until later. But it also depends on if you breastfeed or bottle feed. Bottle feedings get air in it. Breast feeding don't get a lot of air and on top of it, maybe your eating very healthy and not producing that gas reflex for the baby so he won't have to burp. Just be glad. That you have a healthy baby.

My youngest suffered from Colic and had trouble with burping.

It took a little while to figure out how to get him to.....
He never burped in the same position twice,
I had about 5 diffrent ones, and would rotate between them every few minutes.

Also, rubbing in a circular motion in between pats helped, rotating between clockwise and counterclockwise. and up and down.

I would try to burp for about 15-20 minutes, when he didn't I would lay him down to sleep.

If you use air free bottles like playtex with the bags, they may not burp.
The 2 positions I know of to burp is over the shoulder, patting and rubbing back. And sitting in your lap, facing away from you,
hold the little neck & pat & rub the back.

my daughter did the same thing. she would immediately fall asleep and then cry and hour later with a burp in the looms. have you tried putting him on your lap face down with his tummy on your legs and burping him that way? that worked some for us. or really get him hanging over your shoulder as to push on his tummy to help the gas get out.

he might just be one of those that doesn't burp well. don't worry. it won't kill him. once he is big enough he will burp himself. :-) good luck!

Try letting him lay down on the couch or your lap for about ten minutes and then burp him. That always worked with my girls when they had burping problems.
You can also go from holding on your shoulder to sitting him upright with your hand under his chin. Switching positions helps get the air bubble up. Also, I always start low on baby's back and then work my way up. I would sit for 30-45 minutes with my yougest trying to get her to burp and was told these things. It worked for me.
Good luck to you

GIRL, I had the same trouble with my 9wk. old. I tried giving gas drops with every feeding; that helped, but didn't fix the problem. I kept complaining to his Dr. about it, and he said it sounded like reflux to him. He told me to put a teaspoon of rice cereal in all his bottles, because being thicker would help it stay down better. AND it has worked like a charm for me. He gets full faster, burps maybe once, and goes right to sleep( and sleeps longer too!) You should mention this to your Dr. Good luck
