a .dat file is normally a movie file in vcd quality.
i would advise using windows media player to open the file.

If u r trying to open a normal video dat file, open with any video softwares like Win media player, Real player etc.
In case u r trying to open System's dat files like log files then u need some special softwares.

all depends on what type of info is in the file. Many text files such as log files etc have a .dat extention. If it is a text type of file open it in notepad by right clicking on the file and going to open with.
