I feel sorry for the people who think if you are not breatsfeeding, you are a bad mother. that is not the question, now is it?? Regarding water: there is water in the formula you give your child, or if you are breast feeding, in the breast milk. you do not need to add any extra water to a child's diet until they are no longer receiving milk or formula (at 1 year of age) It seems as though she doesn't drink a lot though, so in that case, I would mix some H2O in her cereal, juice (1:1 concentration) you do not need to use distilled water. filtered water or tap water is fine if your water is safe. (do you drink it) always offer her fluids and if she is thristy, she will drink it. You are doing a great job and I am sorry for the negative parenting comments you have recieved.. the ignorance in this world is surprising, yet expected.. If she were dehydrated she would be fussy, have very dry mouth, and losing weight (as water is weight). If these things are not happening, please keep up the good work.

Ok. Everyone told me and I also read that a baby if breastfeeding; does not need water for the first year I believe. If on formula they do. Well, I started breastfeeding but still gave my baby small amounts of water. My mom did the same and my grandmother. If we need 8+ glasses of water a day' why would a baby need none?

There are conflicting opinions on this. Some people say that if you give an infant water, you're filling them up with empty fluid. I always offered my babies water (especially in the summer) How would you like to never have a cool drink and only have slimy milk in your mouth all the time?

If your baby is getting enough formula or breast milk, then they do not need water theoretically. That is the advice of my doctor for my son who is also 7 months. Though 18 oz a day does not sound like enough fluid to me. Try to increase the amount of formula or breast milk, but also don't be afraid to give her some water as well. It's nice for them to clean out there palate especially after eating. I always offer water to my son after his meals. Sometimes, you have to do what you think will be best regardless of what the doc says. I still would recommend checking with your doc to see if 18 oz of fluid is enough for your baby.

I have four children of my own and yes I gave them water. I did sterilize the water though. That was many years ago though. My youngest child is 13 years old. You might need to ask your daughters pediatrician about that seeing as things might have changed since my children were babies.

She is getting water in her formula if you're using powder and mixing it. Have you given her the Gerber baby juice yet? When you do dilute it with water. You're doing fine. If you are still concerned ask her Dr. just to be sure.

Water is not essential at this stage, but small amounts will not be harmful either.
Visit http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/giving-water-to-baby.html - there is lots of info about giving water, plus a link to another page about juice.

My mother in law was driving me crazy to give water to my baby, she is now 8 months old. I saw 3 Dr. they explain to me that Breastmilk and formula are water wilth all the vitamines that baby needs there is----- NO---- need for you to fell your babies tummy with water. babies have a very small stomach. Water is given to babies ONLY in very hot places where you are scare they might get dehidratetad..... I had to get a letter from my DR. so my mother in law will stop trying to give my baby water.
