I THOUGHT AMERICA WAS A FREE COUNTRY...

The flag is a symbol, therefore burning it is an expression or statement. Burning my house (which is not a symbol) is simply arson. Perhaps we should be paying attention to why someone should be so angry at the USA that they want to burn it's symbol? Believe me, it's not because they hate freedom. The USA clearly does not symbolize freedom to these people. If we stay true to our constitution, to the ideal that all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights then we will stop trying to limit those rights or make them conditional on residency status, or political opinion or gender or anything else. 'All Men' and at least since women got the vote (in a constitutional amendment) all women as well. Uphold the spirit of the constitution and stop trying to use it to control the actions of people with whom you disagree.

I do think flagburning should be outlawed, if they don't like the U.S., then maybe they should leave. I don't mind America being a free country, as long as "your" freedoms don't endanger my freedoms. For example...the freedom of the press........I don't want the freedom of the press to be used in giving out sensative information....especially in a time of war. That is uncalled for, inexcusable, and just plain stupid. There is no telling how many soldiers have now died because someone in the news media used this "freedom". Best of luck to you.....

I think banning flag burning is worth keeping on the table for consideration. However, I don't feel it's necessary right now. There are so few flag burners that when most of us see it, we just know that person is seriously off their rocker. We accept it as such and let it go.

I would be all for a ban if there were suddenly numerous burnings being done by illegals in our country. That would truly be an insult and would warrant some sort of leverage to law enforcement.

it is free but you have to consider the values of the majority of a nation over the wants of a few. we say we all have freedom of speech but do we really, can we just come up to someone we don't like and threaten to kill, we don't meant but boy do we feel like saying it...is that ok? no, its illegal because no one can know the intent of the person doing the threatening.....free of expression, if a man or woman are pedophiles and see no wrong in it nor in using their own children or trading them with others and they consider it their own freedom of expression or religion should it be illegal or banned....of course it should. and all these instances and many more are a direct consideration of the values of the majority of the peoples in america. the flag is a symbol, you can burn any piece of cloth you want but the flag represents a lot of lives given in the protection of this nation, a lot of love of freedom and democracy....so in essence you are dispecting those who have gone before you ...its not the cloth its the meaning. i always find it ironic that those who burn the flag are outraged when the kkk or their ilk burn a cross....shouldn't those same people have the same freedom of expression, etc. you can just pick and choose what the law will protect but you can pick and choose what you believe. the only reason these people what to burn the flag is to thumb their noses at the current administration but in reality they are thumbing their noses and disrespecting their fellow citizens and the fact that many of them and their family members died protecting the rights to which these people enjoy. i say show some respect to those who have given so much for so little in return, show some respect to this great nation (if you don't believe that ask saddam how many were able to protest him) and show some respect to others

Flag desecration is wrong and if I saw it I'd be majorly ticked but it shouldn't be outlawed. The government doesn't need to whittle away even more of our rights.

And why are they debating this anyway? Don't they have better things to do? Like fighting a war or keeping our borders secure? *shakes head*

Not that free. Its wrong because its likes a slap in the face to a country. It would be tolerating disrespect to the highest extent. Yes, it should be outlawed around the entire world.

It depends on the situation. If burning the flag is to desecrate it such as holding it on a stick and setting it a flame, that is wrong. But if burning the flag means cutting it to squares and and throwing them into a fire, that is respectful because it is a ceremony to retire the flag.

No, freedom of speech is a constitutional right. Burning a flag is freedom of speech. To deny that right is to oppose the original beliefs this country is founded on.

for all you IDIOTS who think it is freedom of speech,, what if someone wanted to burn your house as "A STATEMENT"? would that be alright?? hey ,, i was just using my freedom of speech!!! no,, the flag is the emblom of everything we stand for and many of us fought, died and were disabled for...people who yell freedom of speech are those who also where too yellow to support their country and the right to this freedom!! what branch on service were you in?? which war did you fight?
America IS a free country,, within the guide lines that rule society.. too many people take "this freedom" to mean that they can do anything they want,, horseshit,, thats what criminals think too!!
