Download PCLinuxOS, burn it to CD, reboot, click on the "install" button.
No more:
150,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions
Sony BMG rootkit
Exploits, Vulnerabilities
crashes, BSODs, incomprehensible messages of failure
DRM (Digital Rights Management)
INCLUDES:
1600 games, programs, Office Suites, secure browsers, system tools, great screen savers, high speed processing (about 8X faster than XP on the same system!).
BTW, the OS and ALL the programs are totally FREE!!!
Did I mention that there is NO CRAP, and, no need to run all the extra programs that would fight Microsoft weaknesses...
No pop-ups! No spyware!

There is no one free way. But if you do these things you will have a good start.
1. First, windows comes with a disk cleanup routine. Look in Startup, Accessories, system tools.
2. Next, enable your windows xp firewall.
3. download Avast anti-virus
4. Download microsoft spyware software
5. Download Ad-Aware SE
Good Luck

someone above said don't connect it to the internet. this won't help much since you can still get viruses from used software and used games games. some people buy new software at the computer store and return it with viruses. the store puts new cellophane on it and resells it again like it is new. if the store doesn't scan them you end up getting these viruses.
always scan any software you get before you try to install it. or you'll be sorry!

No such thing as a 100% "Free" way! I recomend "Fix-It Utilities"
by VCOM. Maybe you can download a free trial from their site.
This software is a class act! I don't know how people manage
to run and maintain their PC's without it.
