When you have problems(break ups, death in the family etc) --- do hear: get over it , that's too bad and well, that's life; but when it's someone else(friends/associates) having similar issues they want your sympathy and your shoulder to lean on....
I have noticed this trend over the last few years and it seems to be increasing....

Excellent observation Jaimestar. Yes this sort of behavior has been around for eons now. Sadly it has been on the increase. Materialism has warped the minds of many. It has made them so cold and selfish. It's sickening.True human values have gone though the window. Love, kindness ,caring, understanding, empathy, sympathy, truth, etc. are priceless. However, in this day and age it seems that if one cannot put a dollar value to something, then it's worthless. That way of thinking is so shallow, but this is what is being bred in the world today. Sad but true.

I think our society has become so busy and self centered. if people slowed down and were not following the all mighty dollar to there mental breakdowns..lol maybe they would have more time for each other. I live in an area that is relaxed and people really care about each other. Then again, we all dont have loads of money to keep us occupied, lol. In a nutshell I think more stress means less time to help others. Just a theory.

Nope, I think people are exactly as they always have been, and are going to be the same way in another 2,000 years. There has always been people who have asked this question over the years, and it is an eternal debate. Everyone seems to notice some sort of negative trend, when in reality, it's just your own cynicism on the rise.

Unfortunatley i have seen the same thing on this site for one. And when I do see uncaring answers like you are talking about i go right to the source and email them back with exactly what I think of them. Not all people are less caring, some people are just jerks. All they think about are themselves and the stupid things they can say to others. Don't get down on all people just because some of them are real jerks.

It's a common situation all because every body believes that they are perfect. they don't realize what another person is going through unless they wear "their shoe and it hurts them in the same spot." Most people are very selfish nowadays, they expect to gain sympathy from another but don't expect to offer it to any body else.

You are right, as time goes on,people are getting less and less caring about their fellow human beings.A lot has to do with proper upbringing and love people receive while growing up. I guess in today too many single parent homes, there isn't much discipline, least love and upbringing.

"We are all of us strong enough to endure the burden of another's misfortunes!" -- Maxims, Le Duc de la Rochefoucauld

the entire text is downloadable free from http://pge.rastko.net/etext/9105

I disagree that people are becoming less caring -- I think they never cared. Our busy, heavily scheduled lives have flaked off the varnish of well-mannered hypocrisy, however.

In his book "Iron John," Robert Bly talks about Greek mythology. Like the Bible, the Greeks believe that mankind was formed from dust. But in the Greek creation story, it is very special dust --the ashes of the Titans. Bly notes that this detail helps explain our coldness and our cruelty.

If you download La Rochefoucauld's maxims and start reading them, SOONER OR LATER you are going to get "hit" by one of them and laugh your head off. Try it and see.

Honestly i think we as a people are becoming self absorbed, self righteous, anal people. I don't know where this has come from, i would like to think that it hasn't always been there, but everyone has their good days and bad........and sometimes the bad simply outweigh the good. Now u ask, is there a way to end this.......I don't know........

Yes people are less caring. The world is falling apart what can I say. Trust is not something you find anymore. Maybe its the way people are raised. What do you do...nothing..
