the largest mall in chicago area (i think it's still the 4th largest mall in america) is woodfield mall and it is close to the airport (ohare)::::::::
http://www.shopwoodfield.com/infodesk/visitors/

Woodfield has the finest collection of department stores and specialty shops in the Great Lakes region. Nordstrom, Marshall Field's, Lord & Taylor, JCPenney, Sears and nearly 300 stores and restaurants.

Surround yourself with fashion, food, and fun at Illinois' #1 tourist attraction. With the most distinctive collection of shopping, dining and entertainment, it's no wonder Chicago's visitors voted it their favorite suburban attraction in 2000.

Located 25 miles NW of Chicago, and 7 miles west of O'Hare, Woodfield Mall is the best destination for leisure guests, groups, reunions, and business travelers.

But if you come downtown, shop michigan ave, watertower, and state street!!!!

If you're near the airport you're NOT going to go all the way to Gurnee or Woodfield to shop, so forget what those other folks said. Not evne sure how you get to Gurnee or Woodfield from the airport other than drive or take a very expensive cab ride and I'm guessing you're not driving to a hotel near the airport.

Just take the subway train from the airport to the city. You can walk down state street and shop. Since there are so many stores and such a wide variety, it's pretty much like a mall. A Macy's (well soon) department store, a Nordstrom outlet store, a Barney's New York I believe, Old navy, Gap, Carson's, a bunch of other stores.

Or you can go over to Michigan Ave. The shops are a bit pricier, but still, so many stores to choose from (Gap, Apple Computer store, Niketown, etc.) Or just walk down Michigan Ave to Water Tower Place, a six or seven floor indoor mall. Again, the shops are a little pricey. Besides the view walking down michigan Avenue is a lot better than strolling around some mall in the middle of nowhere in Gurnee..

Whoever said Ford City (ghetto city) must be on cr@ck. I dont know about the biggest, but definitely in a nice area where you can see the beauty of downtown Chicago, that would be Water Tower on Michigan Avenue. Its easily accesible by train. For great prices you can try Woodfield.

no one has mentioned downtown chicago for shopping. if you're staying near the airport you can take the 'L' to 'Miracle Mile'. Michigan avenue is the best shopping experience. You can start at the north end .. starting at Oak Street. Oak St shopping is like five star shopping. You will find many fashion brand boutiques. As you head south on Michigan Avenue you will encounter many other house of fashions brands with stand alone stores as well as entering the 900 N. Michigan building. flagship store here is Bloomingdales. this building is multi level. two blocks down on your left is water tower. lots of shopping, many levels. flagship stores here is marshall fields (chicago favorite) and lord and taylor. across the street is brand name escada as well as discount fileens basement, victoria secrets as well as a huge bookstore. two blocks further south you will hit neiman marcus on the left, with ralph lauren, and others on your right. next block you'll hit saks fifth avenue - main store on right, mens dept on left. the following two blocks of michigan avenue heading south is full of many more stores. during your walk you will hit garretts popcorn... STOP get a mixed bag of cheese and carmel corn.. this is a chicago must have. an oprah favorite. you are about ready to hit another shopping building with nordstrom and more stores. as you can see, it's the walking of michigan avenue that will give you the BEST shopping experience. have fun. dress cool. august is hot. you'll also be one or two blocks off of lake michigan so you'll get a great view. enjoy!

sickntyred is right, woodfield is the biggest, but I'd recommend Oakbrook. woodfield is just like any other mall, just real big. where oakbrook is really cool with it open air architechture and specialty/high end stores.
