Oatmeal. Take it and grind it in a food processor. Add some water. Make it into a paste, and rub it on. That will soothe it. You can also use Solarcaine, an OTC pain relieving spray. And, aloe gel will help. If you want to heal it faster, get a mulitvitamin lotion with Vitamin C. It'll sting like the dickens, but it will help to repair some of the damage. You have to reapply sunscreen every two hours. More often if you're sweating. Even more often if you're in the water. And even with that level of protection, you can only spend soooo much time outside in the sun. Most sunscreens protect against UVA rays, but not UVB. Next time wear a hat, and long sleeves. Take your clothes and hold them next to a lamp. If you can see light through them, you're going to burn through them. Keep wearing sunscreen while you're healing.

If you have fresh Aloe Vera plants in your garden, consider cutting a few stems in the fridge and then after a few minutes or when it's cool, cutting out the wet flexhy part in the middle and using it as a salve spread it across the sunburned area.
IF you don't have Aloe Vera plants then just go to the store and look for some sunburn ointment that contains it. The one I used in the past was like a green gel-like substance.

As a redhead I have been through this too many times. A vinager and water solution helps when applied to the skin. Aloe helps. Taking showers as hot as you can stand it (cold feels better at first but it tightens your skin making it hurt more later). Noxema (sp) cream works good too, it feels nice and cool going on and keeps your skin from getting tight. Take some Aleve for the pain, stay way from alcohol (will draw water out of your body) and try to sleep as much as you can.

There is a spray product called Burneze that contains a mild anaesthetic that numbs the affected area. It may be available under other brand names, but thats what its called in the UK.
Aftersun or aloe vera are only really for re-hydrating the skin, but doesn't really soothe sunburn.
Cool showers may help, then stand in front of fan to dry off... sounds stupid, but does work.

Aloe Vera is the best remedy for it.
Try applying large quantities of Sun Block [ atlest 50 ] every 45 minutes. Make sure you have shade, or a very good PArasol that reduces the sun's rays from hurting you.

Aloe vera gel works wonders. You rub it on, and it feels really cold at first, but that's because it's taking the heat out of the burn... I highly suggest it. In fact, I swear by it... put it on right before you go to sleep at night, and you won't be woken up by painful sunburn.

Aloe vera is your best bet. Some people say a vinegar bath works, but test vinegar on a small area on your skin because it can only be worse for some people. Good luck.

Aloe Vera and Advil! And cover the burn if you go outside at all or it'll get much worse even from just five minutes. And also if you put ice on it that will help too.
