I live in Orlando, which is relatively light polluted. When looking south between Sagittarius and Scorpius the center of the milky way is missing. What locations in florida are good for dark night sky viewing. Specifically in central florida.

Light pollution is the main clarity problem. Any place 100 miles away for civilisation would be suitable. The Everglades (& away from campfires), is one good place, offshore is another, and central Florida, and perhaps the panhandle region would be suitable.
Call a local museum and mke contact with a local astronomy club, will be able to give you precise places, tips hints, and perhaps a view through an expensive powerful telescope. They're, & helpful people.
Good luck, & have fun,

Hey, I was in Key West at the time of the passing of Halley's comet (1986). It may be best location in Florida, but it is still polluted by light from Miami.

You need to go to one of the mountain states. Or better still New Zealand or Australia. Apart from lots of sparse, unpolluted places, the Southern hemisphere has much better skies than you lot up there.

For instance, the brightest part of the Milky Way comes overhead. We can see the three brightest stars all at the same time - Sirius, Canopus and Alpha Centauri. And we can always see our galaxies "child" galaxies, the so-called Magellenic clouds.

The Keys. Key West, if you can. Beautiful skies, especially if you can get out on a boat and away from the lights of civilization.

Perhaps you could contact the Orlando science center, they should be able to help.
Barring that, anyplace south of kissimmee should suffice.
I have recently learned of the kissimmee preserve but I'm not sure if their open at night.

BTW- How about that shuttle launch today? :P
Happy 4TH !!!!!
