A highlighter plays on the contours of your face, highlighting a feature. You can use a highlighter on your cheekbones (the parts close to your eyes, the boniest area) to play them up, or on your brow bones above your eyes. They are usually shimmery, so be careful. You don't want to look guilded.

I love using the one from Revlon,, it puts a dewy highlited looked to your face. I had it to my forehead and checks.. it also wakes your face up.
It also acts as a primer . I use it on occasion and love it.
