I am assuming that your site pulls in lots of hits, you have to have something to attract advertisers. If your site has a theme, topic, or purpose, talk to related industries. When you find someone willing to advertise on your site, get them to sign a contract agreeing to pay you so much per hit. (a very small amount)

You may want a lawyer to help you devise a contract.

Check similar web sites to see who is advertising on them. Then you can ask them to advertise on your site.

If you are an affiliate for someone else's products they will give you buttons and links that have your unique ID embedded in them to track who is sending the visitors to their website.

If you are looking for advertising revenue from your site then signing up with the Search Engines for their advertising could bring you some income.

On a more personal level, you can just contact businesses and ask them for their money for advertising space at your site. We've done all three and each one has it's strengths and weaknesses.
