well it sounds like you have grubs, or fertilizer burn, or chemicals spilled in the areas. to resolve for grubs use merit or grub-x now ,for burn take about 1 to 2 inches of top soil out and replace with new top soil and reseed and use milorganite or anything that is natural fert water frequently, for chemical same as burn.

These dead spots could be caused by a number of reasons. I would try to get a sample of the soil analized first to see if there is chemical contamination. This should rule out several potential causes and leed you to a way to fix the problem without extra expence and aggrivation.
