I get laughed at for playing chess. do u think this is fair? I sure don't!

if you like to play chess then that is one of your hobbies don't listen to what others say to you, ok. playing chesss is good because it keeps you thinking and it can get you smarter. Some say that is for nerds becasue most of them plays it but playing it doesn't make you a nerd. Keep playing chess and don't listen to others ok

Playing chess is cool at a chess tournament or club, but lets face it, if you talk about chess at a social function, or walk around with a chess board, you will be committing a social foul. Balance your life by developing other interests. If you are smart enough to know when to effectively fianchetto your Queen's Bishop, then you are smart enough to learn the names of some popular songs and form an opinion about key social issues. Use these when talking to non-chess players and you can expand your circle of friends beyond the 64-square battlefield.

There is an anti-intellectual peer-group pressure among streetwise young people that says chess is not cool. Doing well at school is not cool. Spelling words correctly is not cool.
Hanging about on street corners is cool.
Chess teaches you to think for yourself and see this for the ignorant, conformist, unthinking nonsense it is,
if you find attacking chess exciting, play through some games by Tal or Kasparov or amongst contemporary women players Antoanetta Stefanova or Alexandra Kosteniuk and enjoy the fireworks display.

Chess is for intellectual people. It does not make you a nerd. Chess is for cool people. Don't worry what others think - they laugh because they probably can't play. =)

Chess shouldn't make you a nerd intelligent people play chess my 10 year old is very intelligent and plays chess but she only played once because it is boring to her but it is for very intelligent people and you shouldn't get luaghed at.When people luagh at you then they are showing that they are not very intelligent because if they were then they would be happy for you that you enjoy doing something that you like when people laugh with you that shows that they are your friends and enjoy doing something they like WITH YOU NOT LUAGHING AT YOU! so no it doesn't make you a nerd.

No, chess is not for boring people or nerdy people. It is for people who like to use their brain. I think that you will find that some of the most interesting people are chess players. They are people who like to use their brain, absorb knowledge and have some of the best logical thinking skills you will ever find.

It all depends on your definition of nerd. However chess attracts many different people who like some logical stimulation. Historically there were not many female players and this might have contributed to the stereotypical image.
