She is a saavy business woman that has self confidence that transends her lacking exterior beauty and vocal abilities. People have watched her and bought her music for over 2 decades and it doesn't look like they'll be stopping anytime soon. Me personally, I prefer her earlier work, The Immaculate Collection more so than her present day work but like I said, she has a following, and be it blind or not, it doesn't look like it'll be dwindling anytime soon. Kudos to Madonna, were I to be as fortunate as her...

Madonna has remained popular because she has an incredible ability to change with the times and keep people talking about her. With almost every new album since the release of her self titled debut, Madonna has grabbed headlines for something. She has always been able to keep her fans and the press wanting more...no matter how outrageous she has become. Do you remember her performance of "Like a Virgin" on the MTV Video Music Awards? How about the burning cross controversy? Maybe you remember the Justify My Love video uproar or her "Sex" book? What about her marriage to Sean Penn and his antics with the paparazzi? Her divorce, other boy toy dates, marriage number two, and Lourdes...I could go on and on.
I have always liked Madonna and am very impressed at how she is able to change her image to avoid becoming predictable. These are just a few of the reasons I think Madonna has had such a long career. Though you may think she has no vocal range (and you are entitled to your opinion), but maybe she knew her range was limited and kept her song choices catchy and within that range. I think Madonna will be in the music business and in the public eye as long as she chooses to be.

I think it's mostly nostalgia. She was popular in the day (the 80's, when I was a teenager) because for that time, she was so bold and daring. She demonstrated that a woman could act like a hoe and be a strong individual at the same time. It doesn't sound altogether positive, but it was an improvement over the message that a woman had to be a wimpy wuss to attract men.

madonna is popular for the mere fact that she changes herself. Evolves just about every album she puts out there. She touches the audience of "today" and not just keeps putting the same music that she did back in the '80s. Also, she's into shocking people. Why do you think Howard Stern got so popular? They like to make people's jaws drop because it will make them want to know more about her just to see what she will say or do next. Keeps her in the news, and in the limelight. I say, it works for her, good for her.

Madonna is popular for 2 reasons. First she's a smart businesswoman. Second she knows how to get publicity.

Madonna is the original pop princess. She has talent. She continues reinventing herself, finding new ways to market herself.
And it's worked. She has lasted decades. People still love her.

She has figured out that shocking people is a way for popularity and fortune.
At the beginning, it was playing the skank/whore, which all of the teeny-boopers loved.

She's great at self-promotion, a wizard at packaging and branding, constantly reinventing herself by going through various "periods" to keep her hip and relevant. She built a strong fan base in the early to mid 80s... many who are still with her today.

She's a serious businesswoman. She knows what she wants and knows how to get it. I fully respect her career.
I no longer like her music because she's following today's style and I don't. Still, find her work remarkable.
And you can't say she's ugly because I find her very attractive. You should say "I personally find her ugly".

Without music video, Madonna would never have been as popular as she was. That goes for alot of "artists" as well.
